Demography

1.1 < Population size and composition
1.2 Population growth

CMDHB has had the fastest growing population of any DHB with an annual growth rate of 3.2% since 2001, twice the NZ average at 1.6%.  An additional 61,000 people became CMDHB residents in the 5 years from 2001 to 2006, representing 20% of all new New Zealand residents (Table 1.4).  The fastest growing area was Botany/Clevedon, particular the areas of Botany and Dannemora.  An extensive description of the changing demography of CMDHB is given in a recent CMDHB report1.

Maori

The Maori (Maaori) population of CMDHB has grown at a similar rate to the overall population, rising from 60.700 to 76,000 people to maintain a 17% proportion of the CMDHB population.  This overall growth conceals movement within CMDHB, with Otara and Mangere showing a slight decline in Maaori numbers, and a significant decline in the proportion Maaori, while Manurewa and Papakura showed significant increases.  Over a quarter of the populations of Manurewa and Papakura are of Maaori ethnicity.

Asian

The Asian population2 of CMDHB has grown at a very fast rate, from 28,100 in 1996 to 73,200 in 2006 – more than doubling.  This moved Asian from 8% to 16% of the CMDHB population.  The largest growth was in Botany/Clevedon and Howick/Pakuranga (especially Chinese), followed by Papatoetoe and Manurewa (mainly Indian).  Nearly a third of the population of Howick/Pakuranga are of Asian ethnicity.

European and Other

The European and Other population of CMDHB has shown minimal growth over the 1996 to 2006 period – only around 1000 extra people.  The lack of overall growth conceals significant movements within CMDHB, with Botany/Clevedon and Franklin seeing significant increases.  The largest falls were seen in Howick/Pakuranga and Papatoetoe.  Franklin with just over ¾ of its population of European/other ethnicity has the highest proportion, followed by Howick/Pakuranga at two-thirds.  Otara and Mangere have remarkably low proportions of 15% and 19% respectively.
